In second grade, the standards require students to learn to tell time to the nearest 5 minutes.

  • 2nd Grade 2.MD 7: Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.

There are so many great resources out there to support this standard.  In this post, I’ll share some videos and resources that will have your kiddos TELLING time in NO time! These resources can also be used in first grade if students are ready, or third grade for students that need some extra support.

Videos

This is my favorite video to introduce our telling time unit.  It’s great for first or second graders. It starts off with just the hour hand and builds on. Students are asked questions that they can answer as they follow along.

If you want to go a little further into the topic this video is more extensive.  It talks about a.m. and p.m. and breaks the clock up into fractions, covering half hour and quarter hours.

The following videos are part of a series of learning to tell time videos.  They are set up in the same way so students will become familiar with the pattern as they watch each one. Students are shown clocks and asked the time. They can try to answer before the video answers.  I only wish they video gave them more time.  The answer is given very quickly.  Sometimes I play these and hit pause before the answer is given to allow students to answer.  The first video covers time to the hour.   The second covers quarter past. The third covers time to the half hour and the last covers quarter to.

Activities

ABCya has so many interactive games to support all areas of learning.  This telling time activity gives students practice with analog and digital clocks. The 4 levels allow all students to work at their ability level. And no login is required!!  I’ve shared this link in my Google Classroom for early finishers and have sometimes assigned it for homework.  They love a homework assignment that allows them to play 🙂

Education.com has lots of free interactive games for telling time practice. My student love stop the clock and cloud catcher.  Sign up for free accounts so your students can practice from home or at school.

Mrnussbaum.com is another site my students love.  In this game, students have to set a clock to a given time.  They need to be very precise, which really helps them understand where the hour hand is at the end of an hour.

Mrnussbaum.com also has an online quiz for telling time to 5 minutes. It gives immediate feedback and allows students to try again if they get it wrong.

Why not try an interactive digital activity for Google Slides? This activity includes a differentiated version with the same questions but the slides include extra support to help students solve the questions.
